In June of 1864, General William Sherman arrived at the City of Marietta on his march to sea (the Georgia Coast) and burned all that stood in his path. Just north of the Marietta Square, a major battle was fought at Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, 1864. The most significant Kennesaw Mountain battle was Cheatham Hill where General Sherman was delayed on his way to Atlanta by a defeat by Confederate General Joseph Johnson.
